Winter Clothing For Gold Coast

by Tengku

What kind of winter clothing for Gold Coast?

For an Asian going to Gold Coast during June, what kind of clothing do you recommend? Do we need thermal wear?

Additional Information About Winter Packing

As you read through my answer to this question, you will see that what you need to wear depends a bit on what you plan to do. If you have already organised your itinerary, then read on, however, if you are still trying to work out what to do then the Itinerary Planning Sheets & Resources are a great place to start.

PS: Don't forget to read the comments, there are some useful extra tips in there too.

June is the first month of the Gold Coast winter, but it is not the coldest, July and August can get a bit colder.

Earlier in June is usually slightly warmer, but with such unpredictable weather it is best to be prepared!

The average temperatures in June on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise and coastal areas) are usually between 11°C to 20°C although in extreme conditions it could get as low as -1°C.

The temperatures in the Gold Coast hinterland areas are several degrees colder, especially at night.

If you are travelling from Asia to Gold Coast in June you will be coming from your warmer summer months to our cooler (but not cold) winter month. You may find it cold, especially on days when it is not sunny or the wind is blowing.

It will also depend upon where you are in the Gold Coast as certain places are cooler. The main tourist areas of Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Coolangatta are warmer than the inland areas in the Gold Coast hinterland such as Mount Tamborine, Lamington National Park, Springbrook.

Up in the hills it will get cooler as soon as the sun starts to go down and you will start to feel the temperature drop after about 3pm in those areas.

After all that, finally the answer to What winter clothing for Gold Coast? Clothing you need will depend upon:
  • how much you feel the cold;
  • where you plan to go in the Gold Coast;
  • what you will be doing;
  • and, if you think 11°C to 20°C on average is cold?
Personally I don't feel thermals are required unless you plan to go walking in the Gold Coast hinterland areas or camping overnight.

For sightseeing and walking around the main parts of the Gold Coast, it would be really unlikely you would need thermals.

We still go to the beach in June (in fact all winter on warm days!) and the average sea temperature in June on Gold Coast is about 21°C.

I will often wear shorts during the day but will put on extra clothing in the late afternoon and evening, if it turns cooler.

For my clothing, I make sure I have layers and a mixture of long and short sleeves; and long and short trousers (if appropriate).

You may dress differently to me, I am trying to emphasise that it can be quite warm as well as cool in the Gold Coast.

Bring something warmer like a coat or jacket you can put on over your clothes, especially for the evenings if you plan to go out.

Be prepared to change in the late afternoon - I do!

During June, the humpback whales are visiting, I wrote about what to wear whale watching which gives you some ideas if you plan to do an activity like that, whilst on the Gold Coast. Whale watching is from June through to November and for much of the season it can be quite cool to cold out on the water in the open ocean.

I hope that helps answer you question, I am not sure what type of clothing you normally wear, so I hope that I have given you some ideas.

If you have any more questions, please leave a comment below and I will try to answer for you.

Have a great time visiting us in June and come back here and let us know what you thought.

Golfing Attire in July
by: Annie

Golfing attire may depend a little on the club or course you are going to. Some have strict rules etc which I suggest you check out before coming.

If you are asking about general attire for the weather. It would entirely depend on the day you plan to golf. The weather during the day can be absolutely lovely and a suitable pair of long shorts/skirt (for the ladies), 3/4 pants or long pants would be the options. On a windy or cloudy day, you would probably go for the long pants etc, but on a sunny day, shorts and polo/golf top could be fine. I would also make sure to have a light jacket in case it gets cooler or if you are playing later in the afternoon it will get cooler when the sun goes down.

Have you decided which golf courses you are going to? Some are quite shaded or get shaded quite early when the sun goes down especially those in the Gold Coast hinterland. In which case you would want warmer clothing.
'
Sorry it is not a straightforward answer, it's just a funny time of the year when you can easily be in shorts one day and thick jumpers the next!

Cheers
Annie

You have it about right! Jeans and long sleeves may be needed along with windcheater. But I would also pack some lighter clothes at it can be quite warm during the day if sunny and jeans could be too hot! I always suggest bringing clothes you can layer as it can change during the day. Hope that helps, cheers Annie

Reply To Mary: Re July 2016 visit
by: Annie

It has been very cold here too. So I would pack warm! It was 3°C in Coolangatta the other morning! It's getting up into the low 20s, but there's been some wind which is really cold blowing from southern snowfields! In the day in the sunshine it's lovely, but as soon as you get in the shade or the sun goes down it's pretty cool. Coming from Melbourne, you might not feel it as much as us softies in Qld!
During the day I'm mostly in Birkenstocks but if I am going out on the water or into the hinterland I would most definitely wear socks and shoes.
If you are planning on getting out on the water whale watching or going into the hills Mt Tamborine etc, I'd bring very warm jackets.
For most other things you should be fine with lighter jackets, fleeces or sweatshirts/hoodies.
It depends what you want to do, I find I am cold when still, but when I move I am taking the layers off very quickly.
Hope that was helpful,
Cheers

July 2016 trip to Gold Coast
by: Anonymous

Hi,

Just wanted to know if you could help me out we are coming to the Gold Coast this Saturday July 2nd. All the weather reports I have been reading suggest the temperatures will be hovering around the 19 degrees.
As it is freezing here in Melbourne I've forgotten what 19 feels like.

Do you think we will need socks? As for layering how warm should our jackets be?

Thanks for your help trying to minimize packing.

Mary

end September
by: fira

Hi mates!!!

We will be heading to GC comes 22nd September...
ive goggled on whats the typical weather forecast or temperature will be. But im skeptical about it.. what I found is between 13-22°.. as I have 2 toddlers and an infant so a lot of packing needed. I dont want to pack shorts and sleeveless or long pants and stuff like keeping you warm. And when im there its a whole diff temp. People might think we have a wardrobe malfunction. Lol! Your help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

ps: im coming from a place that is always summer.

Annie Answers
I understand your dilemma! I would keep an eye on the weather forecast through our weather page, especially as it gets closer.

I always recommend layers, because it is still a bit variable. Usually by that time in September it has warmed up, but to be honest the weather is a little all over the place at the moment. It was 30C the other day, and then it seemed to get so cold! I hate to say it, but you really will need a mix of clothing, because it can be cooler in the evenings.

If you are coming from "summer" then you will feel the cold a bit more. Not sure that was really helpful to you, but best to keep an eye on the real weather forecasts and then pack according to that.

Are you staying in apartment where you can wash clothes? That can also be an option - I know you are on holidays and probably don't want to do that, but just thought I would mention :)

Winter Clothing
by: Anonymous

Hi,

Im going to Gold Coast on 11 aug-17 aug 2014. Do you what should i wear for wintter attire? Is it very cold?

Annie Answers
It is still winter at that time, I suggest you bring a mix of clothes and layers so you can keep warm if you need to and take off layers if it is sunny and warm during the day. All of the suggestions above are suitable for this time of the year. Hope that helps.

What to Wear End of July Early August
by: Annie

Hi,
The weather will be about the same June, July & August. July is the coldest month usually, so as I have described in this answer above, the same clothes as I suggest. I always suggest layers because on a sunny day, it can be quite warm up into the 20Cs, but wind can make it colder and when the sun goes down that is when you will feel it. So you will need a mix of clothing that you can add layers to and take off. I know it doesn't make packing easy, but we all do that here ourselves! Sometimes I even wear shorts during the day, but change into longer pants later in the afternoon and evening.
Hope that helps, if you want to ask me more direct questions, please contact me through the contact page which will send me an email and we can talk that way.
Cheers

Beannie, Muffler and Jacket for Winter?
by: Annie

Thanks for your question I from Malaysia.

I would keep an eye on the weather forecasts just before you come, but if you plan to visit the hinterland or go on a whale watching trip etc or if you feel the cold, then these things you mention may be useful to you. There is nothing worse than being cold in my opinion! Also, since you are from Malaysia and it is summer and humid, you may find it a bit cooler than we do!

There may be days where you don’t need to wear warm clothes, if the sun is shining and it isn’t windy, you will be very HOT in these items, but when the sun goes down or if you are doing the things I mention above, you may well need these for extra warmth.

I hope that was helpful, please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.
Cheers
