Events in August On Gold Coast

Australian Gold Coast Events August

I don't mind August on the Gold Coast because I know that the end of Winter is almost here and you can start to feel it warming up ready for Spring. That isn't to say sometimes it isn't a little cold - well for us Queenslanders anyway ;-)

There are NO Australian school holidays during August, but there are school holidays in other parts of the world which means our overseas visitors enjoy holidaying in Queensland at this time of the year.

During August there are two main shows that may be of interest to visitors to the Gold Coast. Gold Coast Show at the end of the month, and Brisbane EKKA which runs roughly in the middle of the month.

There's also the Broadbeach Jazz Festival and Tweed Valley Banana Festival!

August is a popular time for visitors from overseas, in particular those from the VERY HOT middle eastern countries love to visit the Gold Coast for some rest from the heat.

Many local restaurants put on special Halal menus during this time of the year and most of the main attractions have facilities to enable visitors from the middle eastern countries to eat and observe their traditions without too much difficulty.

August is a winter month, but is summertime in the northern hemisphere where their main school holidays fall, so once again it is a popular time for visitors from Europe, USA and Canada to name a few.

Often visitors from these countries forget it is our winter, but they can rest assured the Gold Coast winter is quite mild.

The Gold Coast is a year round destination and in my opinion some of the best times can be had during the winter months on the Gold Coast.

As well as the major events, there are events, markets and shows that run throughout the year. You can find more information through these links:

Brisbane EKKA Show

Dates

Mid August - Runs Over 2 weekends

Location

RNA Showgrounds, Bowen Hills, Brisbane

I went to the EKKA (Royal Queensland Show) for the first time in 2010 and I have to say, I was actually quite a convert afterwards.

The best way to get to the EKKA is by train, which you can take from Gold Coast stations to Roma Street Station and then you have to change to a train that goes to the Showgrounds. They run special trains to service the EKKA and the service is very good. It takes about an hour or just over depending upon your connections and which Gold Coast station you leave from.

Make sure you go early, plan what you want to see, wear sensible shoes as you will do lots of walking and be prepared to go on rides, see shows and exhibitions and of course finish off with a stroll around the Show Bag Pavillion!

I went on the first day and there were quite a few school children and early on they were still judging the fresh produce so we had to wait to see that bit. Most days during the week you will find school parties going around and it is crazy busy on the weekends.

You can usually buy your tickets online before you go, or queue up when you arrive. I think you can even buy your entry ticket and train ticket together at the station. More information about ticketing and event programs at the official EKKA website: www.ekka.com.au

Broadbeach Jazz Festival

Dates

Usually Mid to Late August Over a Weekend

Location

Outdoor Stages and venues in Broadbeach

This music festival in Broadbeach features live Jazz performances on outdoor stages and in venues around Broadbeach. If you love jazz, sounds like lots of fun!

Broadbeach Jazz Festival is free to attend and the best bit is you don’t even need a ticket to enjoy this incredible weekend.

Gold Coast Show

Dates

Late August or Early September 3 Days (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)

Location

Gold Coast Turf Club & Showgrounds, Bundall

Gold Coast Show is a bit of an institution in the Gold Coast. There are animals, shows, exhibits, stalls, rides and of course show bags. There is an entry fee to get in, but take lots of money with you because everything costs money inside!

This event previously was held at Parklands Showgrounds. The Friday of Gold Coast Show is theGold Coast Show Day- a local public holiday in the Gold Coast region.

Tweed Valley Banana Festival & Harvest Week

Dates

Usually last week of August

Location

Murwillumbah, Tweed Valley, Northern NSW

There are many events during the festival, which has been running since 1956! These include:

  • The Tweed Valley Banana Festival Fashion Parade
  • Annual Rotary Art Show
  • Tweed Valley Banana Festival Gala Dinner
  • Tweed Valley Banana Festival Street Parade and Family Fun Day

These events sound so much fun! And who doesn't like bananas? Family fun day, floats, Banana Kings and Queens, masquerade ball, fashion parades and lots more.

This is run by the locals to showcase their little part of NSW and it certainly looks like they throw themselves into it.

More information check out their website www.bananafestival.org
