Lone surfer on Burleigh Heads point break

Burleigh Heads is famous for its point break. This point break creates a long and barrelling right-hander!  Well that's what my surfing friends tell me!

Surfing is definitely in the culture here.  It is home to surfing icon brand Billabong International. You will find most of the action for surfing competitions in this area or Kirra.

Beach in Winter

The National Park is like a little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast.  Enjoy a walk through coastal rainforest around the heads and up fabulous Tallebudgera Creek.  If you are lucky you might even see a koala in this area.

The aqua waters and the white sand in Tallebudgera Creek are one of my favourites!

The whole area is great for being near the surfing action or a family beach holiday.

The area is being redeveloped slowly, and there are some fabulous restaurants such as Oscars which we love for Breakfasts and has a great view along the beach, but you have to book to ensure a spot! Very popular.

Accommodation

There are a few options for accommodation in the area.

You will find the accommodation in this area is less expensive generally than that further north in the more popular destination such as Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise.

Generally, the apartments and resorts are older style and some have been refurbished.

Here's a selection of accommodation in the area, or check below for more specific details.

Burleigh Heads Apartments

Gemini Court

Gemini Court is 4* high rise apartment towers with 1 and 2 bedroom options. Airconditioning is available on request, so make sure you ask if you think you will need it. You will pay more for aircon.

Facilities include a heated 15m outdoor pool and spa, BBQ area, sauna and full sized tennis court.

Situated in quiet streets higher up on Burleigh Head with short walk to beach. There are different standards of apartments and the higher up the building the more you will pay (for the view).

This is a well situated apartment tower which would be great for families wanting a bit of 4* comfort.

Gemini Court information, availability and pricing.

Other options for apartments include new high rise Indigo Blue which has 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, 3 bedroom beachfront villas and 3 bedroom sub-penthouse. Located on The Esplanade and therefore directly opposite the beach

Cashelmara offers two and three bedroom apartments and is also well located on the Esplande.

Burleigh Palms and Horizons Holiday Apartments both have 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, however their location is on the busy Gold Coast Highway and a block or so from the beach.

Burleigh Heads Resorts

Sands Mediterranean Resort

Sands Mediterranean Resort is a modern 4½ star resort with most apartments airconditioned and themed with classic mediterranean styling. Previously a Breakfree property called Breakfree Mediterranean, it is no longer managed by the Breakfree group, but is now managed by the Sands group.

The 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments most with ocean or garden views are in two towers.  Resort facilities include outdoor pool and childrens's pool, indoor heated pool and spa, gym, sauna and stunning rooftop BBQ facilities.

The have a light airy feel and if you get an ocean view it is stunning. The position is brilliant for the beach and close to great cafes and restaurants.

More information on Mediterranean Resort including availability and prices.

Swell Resort Gold Coast

Swell Resort Gold Coast (aka Swell Burleigh Beach Resort) is a modern 4½ star resort which has fully airconditioned 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments catering for couples or families.

Resort facilities include large outdoor pool and heated spa, gym, full sized tennis court and BBQ area.

The apartments are fitted out in a modern style and have a light, luxurious feel.

The downside to this resort is that it is on the Gold Coast Highway and you have to cross over it to get to the ocean beach.

It is only a short stroll to some great places to eat and you are hard pushed to find this quality elsewhere in Burleigh.

More information on Swell Resort including availability and prices.

Outrigger Resort Burleigh Heads

Outrigger Resort Burleigh Heads is a refurbished Best Western property (aka Best Western Outrigger Resort) with what they call studio apartments and I call hotel rooms!

Various configurations of queen beds, to triple rooms and family rooms which can accomodate upto 5 people. All airconditioned.  No ocean views, just views over the pool or hinterland.

Positives include it is only a short walk to the beach and there is room service breakfast available from 7.00am to 10.00am each day.

Downside it is situated on the busy Gold Coast Highway.

If you are looking for a budget price and comfortable surroundings this is not a bad choice.

Beach Information

Yet another another fabulous Gold Coast beach!  An extension of the golden sands of the Gold Coast.

Surfers love this area because of the point break.  Surfers must keep away from the flagged areas which are clearly marked on the beach.

When the wind is blowing from the southeast there is some protection on this beach.

Make sure you are aware of the beach and surf conditions and only swim between the flags. The beach is patrolled daily year round at:

  • North Burleigh
  • 4th Avenue
  • Burleigh Heads

And daily from September to April at Tallebudgera.  Beach patrols are usually from 8.00am to 5.00pm unless the beach is closed. Always check with the Surf Life Savers on duty. When in doubt keep out of the water.

Directions for Car Travel

For directions and other information I recommend you use Google Maps Australia.  This will open in a new window, select the directions tab and then type in your starting point and where you want to go.  I find the format the easiest to use and follow.

Not found quite what you are looking for?

Another great family destination is Coolangatta.  For great surf also try Kirra.

Looking for a faster pace?  Try Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach.

A good selection of hotels can be found in Main Beach, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach or resorts in Hope Island, Sanctuary Cove and Carrara.

For golfing holidays check out Sanctuary Cove, Hope Island, Carrara or Robina.

When is the best time to visit?
That depends upon what you want to do, when you can come, your budget and what kind of weather you'd prefer! Check out my guide to the best time to visit the Gold Coast.
